Transition Education

Hillmorton High School has historical connections with Transition Education which developed in the 1980s. This tradition of making the move to life beyond school as seamless as possible still exists. Senior students can elect to choose a course of Transition education at Years 12 and 13.

Personal, employment and social development modules such as Time Management, Career Plan, Interviewing, Parenting, and Independent living comprise the Unit Standards students can achieve. These Unit Standards based courses are enriched with experiential learning opportunities, as part of the course. These involve attending short term courses with vocational and personal development influences and work experience in an elected area.

 GATEWAY

The Gateway programme is an option for most Transition students where they have an individualized Gateway Learning Plan that includes unit standards assessed in the workplace, at school or in a tertiary environment.

Each student is placed in an area of their choice for a length of time, which varies according to the student and the employer. Various other learning opportunities are available for all students from Year 10 ‘one day taster courses’ through to more comprehensive experiences like STAR (secondary/tertiary alignment resource) courses.

TERTIARY TASTERS

Year 11 students are able to take part in Tertiary Taster courses through Christchurch Polytechnic Institute of Technology. These progress through the year and may offer a scholarship for later study at CPIT to committed and successful students.

Transition education can allow student to complete school work alongside the world of work and provides work skills and understandings before finally leaving the school environment.

JOB SEARCH

A Job Search programme under the umbrella of Transition Education is available for students leaving school. At the beginning of each year every leaver from the previous year is contacted to ensure their plans are on track. For those who have changed their plans, an invitation to join Job Search, if appropriate, is made. In a short time after intensive employment preparation, individuals move into work or training.
